Recorded Books recently announced the launch of Universal Class, an online educational service. Universal Class provides diverse course offerings for lifelong learners. The Universal Class catalog lists more than five hundred online continuing education classes. With streaming video, website avatars, instructional content, tutors, and a social networking experience, Universal Class provides options to help lifelong learners achieve their educational goals. Classes are both self-paced and instructor-led.
Gale recently announced major enhancements to Career Transitions, its online career service tool. The features include a new user interface, reporting tools for gauging user activity and additional job-seeking and career exploration activities. New features include interactive interview practice, matching experience to new careers, and report generation based on career search trends and specific advice sought by users.
This summer Gale launched JungleSpeak, a new K-8–oriented app based on the award-winning Grzimek’s Animal Life Encyclopedia. JungleSpeak features animal New Product News sounds and videos, offers detailed animal descriptions and quick facts, and gives users the ability to digitally color animal pictures. EasyBib recently introduced new features to its bibliography-generating product. Users now have the option of linking their bibliographies to an existing Google Docs file, or creating a new one from EasyBib. EasyBib users with iPhones can use the slick app that scans a book’s barcode to generate a bibliographic citation. Boopsie, the leading mobile solution for universities and libraries worldwide, has announced that it will debut a Spanish-language version of its mobile app at this year’s REFORMA conference. REFORMA is a national organization that promotes library and information services to Spanish-speaking populations. Spotify recently launched an invitation only beta phase for U.S. consumers. Spotify is a digital music service that provides on-demand access to more than fifteen million tracks, available via the Cloud. Launched in Sweden in 2008 as a legal alternative to music piracy, the company now claims more than ten million registered users. The company boasts more than 1.6 million paying subscribers across seven European countries and the U.S. marks the eighth territory.
EnvisionWare recently demonstrated EnvisionWare 1-Pad, an integrated RFID Reader and Unidirectional Pad that looks like a large iPad. The new cable-free design improves media detection and incorporates a more powerful RFID reader. EnvisionWare is also offering a new RFID L-Tag. The company describes the new tag as incorporating library-specific engineering design to deliver higher detection rates through the gates, all at a competitive price.
Sony has launched a six-inch touch screen e-reader that weighs less than six ounces. Reader Wi-Fi will be the world’s first ereader to provide wireless public library access directly on the device to borrow e-books. As part of Sony’s effort to support public libraries, Reader Wi-Fi will offer wireless connectivity to the public library system in the United States and Canada via a dedicated icon on the device. Readers can access and download more than 2.5 million titles from Reader Store or shop from a wide range of bookstores and other websites that provide books in compatible formats.
Ingram Content Group recently announced two new library e-content models to provide access to e-books and audiobooks. The first, a content distribution agreement between Ingram and Recorded Books, will provide publishers with access to a larger audience of audiobook purchasers through Recorded Books’ One-Clickdigital platform. The e-audio offering became available in the second quarter of 2011.

Boopsie and CoverCake have simplified mobile discovery of books covered by pop media. Boopsie has announced that it will offer access to CoverCake’s book discovery platform, which makes it easy for consumers to find books mentioned by such popular media as news magazines, radio, and daytime talk shows. CoverCake has created a platform that tracks, organizes, and presents book and author information highlighted on such shows as NPR, Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and The View.
EBSCO Publishing has announced that NoveList will begin incorporating reader ratings and book reviews from Goodreads. The agreement between EBSCO’s NoveList division and Goodreads brings social networking elements into the NoveList product.
Safari Books Online recently announced the availability of its new free iPad app, Safari To Go. Available for download at Apple’s iTunes App Store, Safari To Go is designed for use on Wi-Fi networks and gives access to content in Safari Books Online, while taking advantage of native iPad capabilities like multi-touch and page swiping. The Safari To Go app also gives subscribers the ability to watch training videos on Safari Books Online.
Kirkus Reviews has created a discovery engine devoted exclusively to the burgeoning area of children’s book app publishing and app development. Interactive children’s book apps exploded on the scene during the second half of 2010. Kirkus announced the first Top Ten Children’s Book Apps, reviewing fifty titles and bestowing a “star” on ten. The discovery engine features app demonstrations and interviews with developers and authors.
Veicon-Cloud is a newly launched subscription service that allows patrons to access public Internet stations and information kiosks. Veicon’s V-ASC and V-Timer software runs on Cloud servers to generate one-time-use access codes to control public access systems. Veicon-Cloud service is a low cost option, with no upfront hardware or software investments. At the 2011 ALA Annual Conference, Library Ideas announced that their new ebook platform, Freading (free reading), would launch on September 1. Freading launched with twenty thousand e-books, available for purchase on a patron-driven, per-use basis. This new business model has no upfront cost, platform charges, or access fees, and has tools to allow libraries to control their spending over the course of a budget year. Participating libraries and patrons will have simultaneous access to titles without buying multiple copies.
Library Ideas recently publicized an agreement with IODA Alliance to bring their roster of music to the Freegal music service. This is the centerpiece of a Freegal 3.0 initiative that includes mobile apps and increased search and browse capabilities. IODA adds just shy of three million songs to the current Freegal catalog, with twelve thousand music labels representing artists from more than sixty countries. The IODA collection will augment the current Freegal catalog, which is the Sony Music catalog.
Magnatune, an independent online music service, provides digital music subscriptions to libraries. The Magnatune roster will appeal to patrons with an interest in alternative music. The musicians may not be household names, but there is a wide variety of genres, from world music and classical to alternative music, blues, hip hop, and jazz. The service offers unlimited, simultaneous downloads with no waiting. The pricing model includes fixed costs, unlimited downloads, and annual licenses, and pricing begins as low as ten cents per patron.
Library Journal and Bowker PubTrack have partnered to launch a new online quarterly devoted to market research data for libraries. Patron Profiles will field surveys of 1,500 or more individual library users of balanced demographic backgrounds from eight regions of the United States. Four times a year, core questions will focus on themes and technologies that are impacting library usage today.
Third Iron announced the debut of Brow-Zine technology at the 2011 ALA Annual New Product News Conference. Brow-Zine takes the articles from your journal databases and delivers them as complete journals, allowing patrons to browse and read their favorite periodicals on their iPads. Databases are designed for researchers rather than readers, so much of their content is missed by patrons who are not actively researching. OverDrive has announced the first group of publishers that will provide simultaneous access e-books to libraries and schools in OverDrive’s network. Collections from such publishers as Thomas Nelson, Encyclopedia Britannica, Crabtree Publishing, and Lonely Planet will enable libraries to provide “always available” e-books without waiting lists or holds. Libraries can choose from titles in subjects including Christian fiction and nonfiction, reference young adult, children’s, and travel.
At the 2011 Innovative Users Group Conference in April, Innovative Interfaces announced a new strategic ILS direction for the company and development of the Sierra Services Platform. Sierra development will include open access to key workflow and data through familiar open-source tools. Sierra is built on a foundation of integrated resource management and offers enhanced e-resource/e-book support. Libraries will be able to choose from Innovative-developed products, write their own custom applications, or share software among other Sierra libraries.
Livemocha has announced the launch of the Livemocha Library Subscription, providing library cardholders unlimited local and remote access to coursework in thirty-eight languages. Users also have the opportunity to interact with ten million native speakers from around the world. The 3M Cloud Library E-Book Lending Service was introduced at the 2011 ALA Annual Conference. This e-book solution provides libraries with a turnkey system by including both digital content and in-library hardware, along with apps for borrowing and reading. Random House and IPG are among the first publishers to partner with 3M for distribution via the Cloud Library and 3M plans to announce additional publishing partners shortly.
Amazon recently announced Kindle Library Lending, a new feature launching later this year that will allow customers to borrow Kindle books from over 11,000 libraries in the United States. Kindle Library Lending will be available for all generations of Kindle devices and free Kindle reading apps. Customers will be able to check out a Kindle book from their local library and start reading on any Kindle device or free Kindle app for Android, iPad, iPod touch, iPhone, PC, Mac, BlackBerry, or Windows phone.
A coalition of library and local government leaders will utilize $2.8 million in Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation funding to develop guidelines for library technology access. The benchmarks will dovetail with the Institute of Museum and Library Service’s broader framework but will focus on attainable targeted public technology access guidelines.

Project MUSE has announced the availability of back issues for fourteen more titles. Five of those fourteen titles now have their complete run in MUSE, meaning that their subscribers have access to volume 1, issue/number 1 through the most recent issue of the journal. All archival content is made available to current subscribers at no additional charge. The 14 titles, their new coverage periods, and the collections to which they belong are listed on the Project MUSE website.
A recent agreement between EBSCO and World Book will bring twelve popular reference tools into EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS). Metadata, including full-text searching, for World Book resources will be added to the EDS Base Index, allowing the World Book content to better impact searching through the EDS single-search interface. The twelve World Book resources that will be searchable in EDS include popular English-language titles as well as French- and Spanish-language reference tools.
OverDrive recently announced the release of its free OverDrive Media Console app for BlackBerry with e-book support,allowing libraries to provide direct EPUB e-book downloads on BlackBerry mobile devices. Users at more than 13,000 libraries worldwide can now wirelessly download and enjoy EPUB e-books, as well as MP3 audiobooks, on their BlackBerry devices. The app’s “Get Books” feature makes it easy to find a local library and then browse for titles, check them out with a library card, and download directly to BlackBerry.
Miami University’s Augmented Reality Research Group, led by William “Bo” Brinkman, has come up with a creative solution to make shelf reading and inventory less of a burden. Tentatively called ShelvAR, the Android app uses special tags that are attached to the books’ spines. Each tag carries the call number of the book. A tablet computer or smartphone uses the app to scan the shelf, and a digital graphic indicates the correct placement of the misshelved books. Brinkman plans to design an iPhone version of ShelvAR as well.

The Pew Research Center has released Generations and Their Gadgets by Kathryn Zickuhr. The report provides a new infographic that details the percentages of each generation’s adults who own cell phones, desktop computers, laptops, iPod/mp3 players, game consoles, e-book readers, and tablet computers. Findings are based on a survey of 3,001 adults conducted between August 9 and September 13, 2010.

EBSCO Publishing has added text-to-speech (read aloud) support to EBSCOhost databases, including its major school and public library databases, by embedding Texthelp Systems’ SpeechStream toolbar—a valuable benefit provided at no additional cost to the user. Users will be able to take advantage of this new feature with any full-text articles available in HTML.
Polaris customer Yellowhead Regional Library (Alberta, Canada) announced the availability of its iPad application, YourLibrary, from the Apple store. Mango Take-Out is the boxed product version of the Mango Basic Online courses. Each Mango Take-Out box contains a USB drive, preloaded with the Mango Basic course for one individual language. There are twelve languages available in all.

Searching is great, but it’s not everything. Browsing a shelf provides context and invites serendipity. OCLC and EBSCO Publishing have signed an agreement whereby EBSCO will purchase the assets of the OCLC NetLibrary Division. The purchase includes the NetLibrary eBook and eAudiobook platform as well as operations and infrastructure in Boulder, Colorado.
Now libraries can offer their patrons the convenience of being able to fax worldwide from the Fax24 Self-Service Public Fax Machine. There is no cost to the library; Fax24 owns the equipment and all long distance charges are billed directly to the

OverDrive announced the availability of their free audiobook application for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The iPod-Compatible eAudiobook Subject Sets make it easy for users to connect, click, and listen to eAudiobooks on virtually all MP3 players, including iPods, iPhones, and many other portable listening devices. OverDrive announced a joint marketing agreement with Sony Electronics, developer of the Sony Reader Digital Book. OverDrive and Sony will cross-market OverDrive’s library network and the Reader, an e-book device that is compatible with industry standard e-book formats offered by libraries.
Moderro Xpack is a miniature computer that was built specifically for public areas. The Xpack CPU is a small (paperback-size), low power, silent mini-computer. It weighs around three pounds and consumes on average thirteen watts of power. Xpack comes with custom-designed keyboard and mouse, Ethernet CAT5 and VGA cables, and mounting hardware. The CPU can be placed in a cradle that can stand alongside the monitor, or be attached to the back of the monitor using the VESA bracket (included).
The Library Corporation (TLC) has developed LS2 Kids––the children’s version of TLC’s LS2 PAC. LS2 Kids was developed with input fromlibrarians as well as children ages five to eleven.
